Living on a Volcano

I was talking to the boatyard manager yesterday. He was sweeping up stones from the boat ramp.

I asked where all the stones came from. He smiled. Then he bent over, picked up a stone and tossed it to me without saying a word. I was shocked at first. The stone was almost weightless. I looked at him and said, “Pumice!” He smiled and said “Well, we live on a volcano.”

Pumice pebbles float up onto the boat ramp with the tide each night.

Floating Pumice

After that, I started to notice the stones floating past the boat. I have a small collection for my granddaughter. I’m sure it will be amusing while she learns that stones can float!
