The Ocean White Party takes place on the first Saturday of August. It is one of the largest outdoor summer parties in Ponta Delgada.
White Ocean Motifs decorate the streets. The people were all dressed in white. The wearing of white commemorates the freshness of the summer days and is an allusion to the foam of the ocean’s waves.
Jellyfish Decorations in the Street
A different motif decorates each street. In addition to the ones seen here, there were sting rays, fish, and octopuses. You can see the ultraviolet lights in the photo below. For two weeks, the city workers run electrical wires, and decorations, construct stages, and beer stands throughout the city center.

All around the city, there are regional artists performing, eating and drinking stands, music, and DJs, which attract thousands of people to the city’s gate; turning the large square into a dance floor.

The ultraviolet lighting was challenging. Most photos are blue blobs.
The main stage by the City Gate had a blues and rock cover band that was great! They had the smoke machine and laser light show, as well.
Many of the stages had DJs playing club music. On the stage by the marina, there was another live band playing rock.
People packed the streets, shoulder to shoulder. It seemed that everyone was happy and enjoying themselves.
