On Saturday, July 15th, I enjoyed a late afternoon beer at my favorite cafe’; Azores Forever. UB40’s remake of “Red, Red, Wine” was playing. I looked over at a table slightly behind me. The conversation was interesting; part English, Portuguese, and Spanish. All three languages are common, but not in one conversation.
There I saw an elderly man with a long white beard, wearing a black cap. I knew this man! Not personally, but I took a photo of him a few weeks ago. He did not speak English at all. Somehow, at that time, I was able to learn that he was from Patagonia! After looking for him for a week to give him a copy of the photo, I gave up. I thought he was just on vacation.
It turns out that he is an artist… a rather famous artist and he spends his summers in the Azores selling his sculptures. He works with antique cutlery; spoons, forks, and knives. He refers to it as Fork Art. Today, He had set up a small table by the cafe’ for a little more exposure.
He explained his t-shirt is a photo of Diego Maradona, a famous Argentinian soccer player who was with his son and someone else. It’s amazing how much you can learn when there is a person nearby to translate for both of us.
He loved the photo and wanted to pay me for it. I refused payment but sent the photo to his email.
